The Pegoretti Elio Is the Road Bike We Need Right Now

The road bike industry loves its marginal gains. It's obsessed with weight and over-zealous about aero. The bike industry is a teenager on too much caffeine.

In our humble opinion, with all of the talk about the minutiae of how a bike is made, how fast it goes and what it does in the wind, we risk losing sight of the best thing about bikes: the simple joy of actually riding them.

We're not machines, and while a well-optimised bike fit is always a good idea, wherever you are in your cycling life, the best thing for your legs, your head and your heart is to ride your bike and not get caught up in much of the noise that comes with ‘serious’ road riding.

This is the internet, so we'll assume a certain lack of nuance and contextual awareness from general readers (but not Bike Tailor people, of course!). So, in case it's not clear, we're not saying that numbers don't have their place - we are, after all, often in the wind tunnel, the home of marginal gains - but that they need to be kept in balance with why we ride in the first place.

As long-winded intros go, the reason we're on a numbers trip is because today, Officina Pegoretti released a new bike that stakes a claim for speed without stats.

The Pegoretti Elio is a pure road bike in the finest Italian tradition. It's made from highly customised Columbus XCR stainless steel, with shapes that taper to reveal a silhouette so good-looking you may have a job looking away.

Naturally, it's fast, stiff, responsive and, like all Pegoretti bikes, comfortable beyond measure. But it's also a lot of fun, as evidenced by the paint scheme and the joie de vivre in the film that accompanied the release. This is a bike built for riders who want to send it, idle over a good coffee, and still snag a personal best on the way home after a sizable and possibly ill-advised sandwich.

Made in Verona by hand, the Pegoretti Elio meets the road with clearance for 32mm tyres (it is a pure road racer, after all, and we're pleased they didn't fold in all-road to try to make it more accessible), internal routing - the first-ever on a Pegoretti - electronic-only groupset compatibility and disc brakes. Pegoretti fans of old, you may now pass out.

We love it, and we think you will, too. All hail Elio.
