We are excited to announce that The Bike Tailor has partnered with GTN (Global Triathlon Network) for an insightful wind tunnel testing feature. This collaboration highlights the importance of aerodynamics in triathlon gear and showcases the expertise of our resident aerodynamicist, Stephen Roche.

In this GTN video, available on YouTube, we delve into the aerodynamic advantages of modern triathlon equipment compared to gear from the 1980s. The comprehensive tests cover various elements, including wheels, bike frames, aero helmets, and even socks and calf sleeves.

Highlights from the film:

Socks and Calf Sleeves: Modern calf sleeves provided a significant aerodynamic advantage over both modern and 1980s socks, as well as Mark’s unshaved legs.
Shoes: Surprisingly, 40-year-old shoes were found to be faster than modern aerodynamic shoes, although the comfort of modern shoes was emphasized for long-distance rides.
Apparel: Modern triathlon kits showed a substantial improvement in aerodynamics compared to the flapping materials of 1980s gear.
Helmets and Hairstyles: Even average modern helmets offered considerable aerodynamic benefits over vintage ones, and hairstyles also played a role in overall performance.
