Baum Cycles: Masterfully Built Titanium Road and Gravel Bikes
To understand Baum Cycles, you have to understand the person behind the brand, its namesake, Darren Baum. Darren is an enigma, a polymath, equally at home designing and welding. He is that rare thing: an engineer with a wild streak of eccentric creativity, a man able to envision a solution, draw it, design it and make it with his own two hands. Of course, Baum Cycles is now more than one man, as Darren would quickly point out, but his philosophy and drive remain as potent as the first day he picked up a welding torch and wondered, ‘Why not?’
Baum Cycles hails from Melbourne, Australia. Its material of choice is titanium. One look at the welds of a Baum will tell you all you need to know: a Baum bike is a masterpiece, built for speed, comfort and exceptional resilience. That Baum frequently references marques like Leica and Singer (Porsche) as inspiration for its work may provide further illumination as to what you should expect from this enigmatic brand.
Take your pick: the elegance of the Celaris, the ultimate realisation of titanium perfection, customised, butted to within an inch of its life, and painted with world-class care, depth and brilliance. Or the Orbis, available in all-road or '+' and 'X' variants that draw by degrees ever deeper from the trail. Or the DBM, a bike that rides a new wave, melding 90s cross-country mountain biking and the modern rider's demand for a drop bar bike that can attack any trail.
In-house fabrication, 3-D printing, peerless innovation—Baum belongs to a category of one. Its mastery of titanium, tube choice, and butting, knowledge of rider dynamics, and expression of fit where the rubber meets the road combine to deliver a sensational ride.
For each of its models, Baum offers Tailored or Standard sizing.
Tailored is the works - all-encompassing, custom-fitted and crafted with meticulous personalisation. Butting profiles, drawings – even top tube slope – are yours alone.
Of course, many riders will not need the level of customisation offered by Baum’s Tailored package, and for those, Standard sizing is a great choice. Choose one of Baum’s seven-size offerings, in addition to the stem length and seat post offset, and your bike will come to life with the same tools and hands as Tailored.
Baum is justifiably proud of its paint finishes, which colour the road with a quality on par with its welds. As you would expect, all Baum frames, forks, stems, and posts are painted by the brand in-house. And all without a decal in sight. However, if you prefer to let more of the raw titanium show, Baum offers a range of bead/garnet blasted and polished options.
Baum in three words: Passion, precision and performance. There are other words, each more inspiring than the last, but perhaps we’ll take the lead from the classical simplicity of a Baum silhouette and say: just look; it’s enough. It was for the great Dario Pegoretti, who regarded Darren as an equal in every regard, a man intent on creating his vision of the perfect bicycle.
